Solar street lighting is a form of street lighting with the help of photovoltaics that is independent of external power supply . It is used to illuminate streets, parking lots or paths independently of the power grid and produces the required energy itself by converting sunlight into electricity ( photovoltaic effect ). Solar street lighting does not require a power connection and is otherwise similar to conventional street lights.

Since solar street lights do not need a power connection, cables and civil engineering measures can be dispensed with during installation.

An integrated or additionally installed solar module converts incident sunlight into electrical power and feeds it into an integrated accumulator . Almost all brands use monocrystalline silicon to manufacture the necessary solar cells. When dusk falls and the electrical charge is interrupted , an LED spot lights up on the underside of the housing. Depending on the capacity of the battery, different lighting times are provided by the manufacturer. As a rule, these are different luminous intensities that decrease by the hour in order to save electrical energy . At daybreak, the LED panel switches off and the solar cell starts charging again. Some manufacturers also integrate a motion detector into their devices in order to achieve additional savings in stored energy. The street light then works with less power and lights up brighter when there is movement in its surroundings.
