Octave Depont (born 1862 ; died in the 20th century) was a French colonial administrator in Algeria and an orientalist . Together with Xavier Coppolani , he wrote a much-noticed work on the Sufi fraternities : Les confréries religieuses musulmanes ( Algiers 1897). He entered the service of the Algerian administration in 1880, at the age of eighteen. He was administrateur de commune mixte and head of cabinet ( chef de cabinet ) of the Préfet d'Alger , then sous-préfet of Mauléon , Deux-Sèvres . H. Khemissi et al. according to the French government deliberately investigated the Sufi orders in order to undermine them and to make colonialism a success. Previously, Édouard de Neveu (1809–1871) had already been commissioned by the French government to investigate the Sufi orders.
