Internet forums

Oekaki Internet forums allow users to create drawings with the applications stored on the server and publish them in the connected forum. Users do not upload finished drawings, but create them live in their web browser using a mouse , a graphics tablet or a touchscreen . However, there are also Oekaki that allow the upload of finished drawings, but this is subject to certain restrictions such as a certain number of uploads per week.

The underlying technology can be a Java applet or ActiveX . Some systems offer a range of functions with which drawings can be made on a professional level. The respective image size is limited to a few hundred pixels in height and width.

If this function is supported by the respective system, the users of the corresponding forum can watch the creation of the drawing as an animation . Some also offer a continue function, which allows the artist to pause work on his drawing and to continue at the same point at a later point in time. In addition, various systems also offer the use of levels.

Oekaki's Anime - subculture very popular as it without the use of image processing software , the production and exchange of fanart allowed.

Software (selection)

  • OekakiBBS was the first Oekaki applet of its kind and, compared to more modern versions, has a limited number of pallets and few grid foils. Its features are color gradients, several levels, masks and storage of the creation as an animation.
  • PaintBBS is a simple applet created by Shi-chan, which supports 2 layers and a mask. The system has a large number of pallets which can be used for a large number of effects.
  • Shi-Painter and Shi-Painter Pro , Shi-chan's newest applets, are enjoying increasing popularity. However, they still have to prevail, as outdated software is still being used for the most part on the servers.

There are also other applets such as PictureBBS and BBSPainter , but these are not widely used. Lascaux Sketch , an applet that can be found under 2draw.net, is not publicly distributed but probably provides the most powerful range of functions of all systems currently available.
