Oescus Island (English; Bulgarian остров Ескус ostrow Eskus ) is a low, non-icy island in the South Shetland archipelago, 380 m long and 40 m wide in a southeast-northwest orientation . It lies in the group of Onogur Islands off the north-west coast of Robert Island and consists of two parts connected by a headland . A 120 m wide strait separates it from Redina Island , 160 m from Kovach Island and 130 m from Leeve Island .
British scientists mapped it in 1968, Bulgarian in 2009. The Bulgarian Commission for Antarctic Geographical Names named it in 2013 after the ancient Roman fort Colonia Ulpia Oescus in northern Bulgaria .
