The Onogur Islands ( Bulgarian Оногурски острови Onogurski ostrowi ) are a group of nine islands and some cliffs in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They are located between Carlota Cove in the southwest and Clothier Harbor in the northeast, off the northwest coast of Robert Island , about 700 meters southeast of Cornwall Island . The archipelago includes:
- Churicheni Island
- Grod Island
- Kovach Island
- Leeve Island
- Oescus Island
- Osenovlag Island
- Redina Island
- Svetulka Island
- Vilare Island
The two largest islands in the group, Kovach Island and Grod Island, have an area of 11 and 10 hectares, respectively .
British seafarers and scientists carried out surveys in 1822 and 1968, Chilean scientists in 1971, Argentine in 1980 and Bulgarian in 2005 and 2009. The Bulgarian Commission for Antarctic Geographical Names named them in 2009 after the village of Onogur in northeastern Bulgaria in connection with the Onogur people .
