Oghamstone from Kilmurvy
The Oghamstein of Kilmurvy is in the townland of Kilmurvy ( Irish Cill Mhuirbhigh ) near Kilronan on the Aran island Inishmore in County Galway in Ireland .
The Ogham Stone is located next to the souvenir shops at the beginning of the ascent to the stone fort Dún Aonghasa or Dun Aengus. The approximately 2.0 m high, slender, weathered stone bears a largely preserved Oghamin script . Ogham is the earliest written form in Ireland. It was used between the 4th and 9th centuries AD. The alphabet consists of a series of strokes along a line or edge of a stone. Ogham inscriptions were carved to commemorate someone.
