The Ohrbüschelmoho ( Moho bishopi ) or Molokai Krausschwanz is an extinct songbird from the genus of the Krausschwanz . Walter Rothschild named it after Charles Bishop, the founder of the Bishop Museum .

description

The ear-tufted moho reached a length of 29 cm. The tail was about 10 cm long. The plumage was mostly black, on the chin, under the wings and under the tail-coverts there were yellow tufts of feathers.

distribution

It was endemic to the mountain forests to the east of the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i . There are also subfossil bone finds from the island of Maui .

Way of life

Little is known about his way of life. As far as we know, he fed on nectar and preferred flowers of Bellflower Family .

die out

The reasons for its extinction were habitat destruction through deforestation, the reenactment by introduced mammals and epidemics that were brought in by mosquitoes. Hunting may have played a subordinate role because of the coveted yellow feathers that were used to make the cloaks for the nobility. Thousands of birds were caught for this purpose. Many were released after the feathers were plucked, but many others ended up in the cooking pots because the meat of these birds was considered a delicacy. In 1904 it was last detected by the ornithologist George Campbell Munro . In 1915 Munro followed up on individual reports from the Wailau Trail area, but could not find any more copies. In 1981 there should have been a sighting on Maui , which was never confirmed.
