George Campbell Munro

George Campbell Munro (born May 10, 1866 in Clevedon , New Zealand , † December 4, 1963 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) was a New Zealand-American ornithologist , entomologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " GC Munro ".

Live and act

Munro emigrated to Hawaii in 1890 and worked with Henry C. Palmer as a bird collector for Walter Rothschild until 1893 . From 1911 to 1928 he was the manager of the only cattle farm on Lānaʻi. In 1918 he initiated the creation of protected areas on Lānaʻi . From 1935 to 1937 he led the first large-scale bird exploration expedition to the Hawaiian Islands. In 1939 he was one of the founders of the Hawaiian Audubon Society , for whose journal “ Elepaio ” he wrote over 175 scientific articles. In the same year he became a member of the American Ornithologists' Union . In 1944 Munro's standard work " Birds of Hawaii " appeared, in which all of the Hawaiian bird taxa known at the time were described. In 1960 a revised version of the book was published.

Honors

The plant genus Munroidendron from the Araliaceae family, the extinct Lanai hooked beak ( Dysmorodrepanis munroi ), the ʻAkiapolaʻau ( Hemignathus munroi ) and the Munro Trail (an approximately 12 kilometer long game trail on Lānaʻi) are named after George Campbell Munro .
