Normal or de jure version of a flag? Flag of New York City since 1977

The flag of New York City is a tricolor of three vertical bars in blue , white, and orange with the city seal in blue in the center bar. The three-tone design comes from the flag of the United Netherlands , which was used when Nieuw Amsterdam was settled on Manhattan Island in 1625 .

The current design is dated December 30, 1977 when the seal was changed to use the year 1625 instead of 1664 (when England took possession). The Latin inscription Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci ("Seal of the City of New York") also became optional, which means that two variants are now equally accepted.

The office of the Mayor of New York City has its own official variant, in which an arch of five stars (each stands for one of the five boroughs ) is shown in blue above the seal.
