Oinopides was an ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician. He came from Chios and lived in the second half of the 5th century BC. In Athens .

Oinopides believed that the space around us is not only made of air but also of fire. With the help of astronomical observations, he tried to prove various of his ideas. Among other things, he was probably the first to calculate the skew of the ecliptic . He determined the solar year relatively precisely to be 365 22/59 days and the lunar period to 29.53 days. He called for mathematics to be limited to simple tools such as angles and rulers.

The moon crater Oenopides is named after him.
