Ojub Salmanowitsch Titijew

Ojub Titijew ( Russian Оюб Салманович Титиев ; born August 24, 1957 in Lebedinowka , USSR) is a Russian human rights activist . Titiev is a representative of the human rights organization Memorial in the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Chechnya .

Titiev is a devout Muslim. He was a physical education teacher and boxing coach in Kurchaloi when he began documenting the atrocities of the Chechnya war in 1994. He was arrested by police officers in January 2018 on the way from his home village of Kurchaloy to the office of the human rights organization Memorial in Groznyj. 200 grams of marijuana were reportedly found in his Lada . The trial against him began in July 2018. In March 2019, he was sentenced to four years in a camp for alleged possession of drugs. On June 11, 2019, it was announced that Titiev would be released on parole. In the preceding days there had been violent protests against the arrest of the journalist Ivan Golunov , who was also to be tried for alleged possession of drugs.
