Kurtschaloi ( Russian Курчало́й ; Chechen Курчалой-Эвла Khurtschhaloj-Eula ) is a city in the Republic of Chechnya ( Russia ) with 22,723 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus , about 35 km as the crow flies east-southeast of the republic capital Grozny and 15 km south of the city of Gudermes . The city is located on the Chumyk river, which flows a few kilometers below into the Gums, a right tributary of the Sunsha tributary Belka.

Kurtschaloi, the most populous in front of the town charter rural community of Chechnya, is the administrative center of the same name Rajons Kurtschalojewski .

history

Kurchaloi came from an old Chechen village. The etymology of the place name is unclear; Possibly it can be traced back to the Avar kurusch for money , wealth , which was transferred to the name of a Chechen family group ("Teip") living in this area . Originally it was also called Kurtschaloi- Aul , the year it was founded is assumed to be 1860. During the uprising of the Caucasus peoples against the Russian occupation from 1877, Kurchaloi was temporarily taken by the insurgents in April 1877.

During the Soviet period, on January 23, 1935, the place became the administrative center of the newly founded Rajon of the same name, which was dissolved on February 23, 1944 in connection with the deportation of the Chechens and the liquidation of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR . The place itself was renamed after Valeri Tschkalow in Tschkalowo .

After the restoration of Chechen autonomy, the place was renamed and the Rajon was restored in January 1957. But it only existed until 1962 when it was absorbed in the Schalinski rajon . The Rajon with its administrative center in Kurtschaloi was re-established on August 1, 1995 within its current borders.

With effect from January 9, 2019, the city charter was granted at the end of 2018.

Economy and Infrastructure

Kurtschaloi and the surrounding area are dominated by agriculture (mainly grain and sugar beet cultivation). Some pre-existing farms for processing agricultural products were wholly or partially destroyed in the course of the Chechen wars.

The road that runs from the town of Argun near Grozny to the eastern parts of the Rajon with the villages of Zentoroi and Alleroi runs through Kurtschaloi . This is crossed by the Gudermes - Shali road in Kurtschaloi .
