The Schalinski rayon ( Russian Шалинский район ; Chechen Шелан кӀошт ) is a Raion in the Chechen Republic in Russia . It is located southeast of the republic capital Grozny and south of the Argun district . The administrative center is the city of Shali .

The population is 115,970 (as of October 14, 2010; 2002: 109,218; 1989: 136,590).

The largest towns besides Shali are the villages of Awtury , Germentschuk and Mesker-Jurt , each with over 10,000 inhabitants (2010).

There are hospitals in Shali and in the village of Tschiri-Yurt (a former urban-type settlement with a large cement plant, which was destroyed in the First Chechen War and partially rebuilt from 2007).
