Shali ( Russian Шали́ ; Chechen Шела Schela ) is a city and administrative center of the Rajons of the same name in the Republic of Chechnya in Russia . It has 47,708 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located 36 km southeast of the republic capital Grozny , on the Jalka river ( Terek river system ).
history
The place was already known as Aul in the 19th century , i.e. as a larger village with a population of several thousand. During this time, Shali was fought several times between local rebels and the Imperial Russian Army .
Shali has had the status of a city since 1990. In the First and Second Chechen War in the 1990s, it was, like many other places in the Republic, severely damaged.
