Urus-Martan ( Russian Уру́с-Марта́н ; Chechen Хьалха-Марта Halcha-Marta ) is a city with 49,070 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Republic of Chechnya in Russia , on the northern edge of the Caucasus .
General
Urus-Martan is located in the central part of Chechnya, 31 km southwest of the capital Grozny on the Martan River in the Terek river system . It is the administrative center of the Rajons Urus-Martanowski and second largest city of Chechnya.
The place has had the status of a town since 1990, before that Urus-Martan was a large village ( Aul ) that existed at least in the 19th century.
The economy of the city and the Rajon today consists mainly of agriculture and some food factories. The R217 highway runs near the city and leads from the Krasnodar region to the Azerbaijani border.
