The Friedrich List Vocational College (FLB for short) is part of the Vocational College Center of the Herford an der Aawiesen district. The Wilhelm Normann vocational college and the Anna Siemsen vocational college are also located here. The school is named after Friedrich List . The FLB is located directly on the Aa and in the vicinity of the Aawiesenpark. The Friedrich List Vocational College has 60 classrooms, which are divided into 3 small group rooms, 14 IT rooms, a self-study center, an EVA room, specialist rooms and finally 40 classrooms. Physical education takes place in two sports halls that the FLB shares with the two neighboring vocational colleges. In 2010 there were 118 teachers at the Friedrich List Vocational College, who taught around 800 vocational, 1000 full-time and 250 technical students in 15 courses.

Chronicle of the school

In 1889 the Herford merchants established a “commercial association” with the aim of founding a commercial training institute. In the following year, on April 14th, 1890, the “Handelslehranstalt des Kaufmännischer Verein” was founded. From 1915 onwards the school was called the “Private School of the City of Herford”, but it continued to be under the administration of the Commercial Association until it was again converted into the “Städtische Handelslehranstalt zu Herford” in 1920. From 1924 the commercial college was co-administered by the head of the "Gewerbliche Berufsschule", but this was not of long duration either, since in 1929 the commercial college restored its independence.

At the time of National Socialism , special classes were founded for Jewish students out of “ideological necessity”; these were then dissolved again in 1938. In the autumn of 1944, the first emergency final exams were written in the commercial school . The school was temporarily closed on March 28, 1945, to resume normal school operations on April 1, 1946.

In 1963 the school was renamed "Friedrich List School" by a council resolution after the German economist Friedrich List . In 1976 today's vocational school center was inaugurated in the Aawiesen. In 1998 the Friedrich List School was renamed and has been called "Friedrich List Vocational College Herford" since then, and in 2003 the FLB was named a European School. Since 2012, the FLB has carried the award School without Racism - School with Courage .
