Okinawa Denryoku KK ( Japanese 沖 縄 電力 株式会社 Okinawa denryoku Kabushiki kaisha , German 'Electrical Energy Okinawa' ; short: 沖 電 Okiden , English The Okinawa Electric Power Company, Incorporated , short: OEPC) is the youngest of the major Japanese electricity suppliers.
Power generation
She is responsible for the area of the Ryūkyū Islands of Okinawa Prefecture . There are around 150 larger and smaller islands, 39 of which are inhabited. This means a major logistical problem, as the islands are scattered over a huge area of 1000 km by 400 km and a cable connection - as security - to the mainland therefore cannot exist.
Since 2006, the power plant output has almost doubled and switched from coal to oil firing. Only the Gushikawa and Kin power plants still need coal, but they account for 21% of total production. The remainder is fueled by LNG and kerosene. In fact, wind turbines do not play a role.

The Yoshinoura gas power plant went into operation at the end of 2012. On November 27, 2012 generator 1 and on May 23, 2013 generator 2. On smaller islands , the electricity is generated using diesel generators and gas turbines.
history
From 1945 to 1972, the Ryūkyū Islands and the Daitō Islands were under American administration ( USCAR ). The Americans founded some supply companies for the residents of the islands and the American military, including the Ryūkyū Denryoku ( 琉球 電力 公社 Ryūkyū denryoku kōsha , German ' Public Company Electrical Energy Ryūkyū' ), the Ryukyu Domestic Water Corporation and the Bank of the Ryukyus . With the formal handover of the islands on May 15, 1972 from Ryukyu Denryoku the Okinawa Electric Power Company . In 1976 five other smaller utilities were taken over. The company was privatized on October 1, 1988 and is one of the 10 large energy suppliers in Japan that have regional quasi-monopolies.
