The Old Avon Bridge is a road bridge in the Scottish town of Hamilton in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
description
Now known as the Old Avon Bridge, the bridge was built during the 16th century. In the course of the establishment of the new trunk road from Glasgow to Carlisle , the bridge was replaced in 1825 by the Avon Bridge , which is about 200 m downstream . Today it is a private bridge with no infrastructural significance, the use of which is restricted to pedestrian traffic.
The Old Avon Bridge is located on the eastern edge of Hamilton at Chatelherault Hunting Park . The 43.9 m long masonry viaduct spans the Avon Water with three lined segment arches with clear widths of a maximum of 9.8 m. The arrow height is about 9.1 m. The roadway between the border parapets is 3.1 m wide.
