description
Around 200 m upstream of the bridge, on the edge of what is now Chatelherault Hunting Park , a bridge was built over Avon Water in the 16th century . This is now known as the Old Avon Bridge . The Avon Bridge in use today was built between 1823 and 1825. The design was provided by the engineer Thomas Telford , who was one of the most important Scottish bridge designers of his time. The Avon Bridge was part of the road between Glasgow and Carlisle was concerned, whose construction Telford 1815-1825.
The masonry viaduct spans the Avon Water on the eastern edge of Hamilton with a segmented arch . This has a clear width of 24.8 m. The arrow height is 13.7 m. The hollow construction of the gusset is consistent with Telford's usual construction of single-arched bridges. Only a curtain wall with four niches extends under the parapet. The historic customs post can still be found on the east side. The masonry of the one-story building consists of stone blocks.
The Avon Bridge leads the A72 (Hamilton– Galashiels ) over Avon Water. With the establishment of the M74 , which runs north of Hamilton to Glasgow, the A72 and thus the Avon Bridge lost its infrastructural importance for the region.
