The Old Bridge of Ayr , also Auld Bridge of Ayr or Auld Brig of Ayr , is a former road bridge in the Scottish town of Ayr in the Council Area South Ayrshire . The building, which is now only used by pedestrians, was included in the Scottish monument lists in 1971 in the highest monument category A. A former classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 1998.

A bridge in Ayr is mentioned in the royal charter from 1236. It could be from the year 1232. However, this is undoubtedly not today's bridge. This was built between 1470 and 1525. As early as 1597 its condition was described as ruinous, whereupon in 1732 the northernmost arch collapsed. The structure was repaired several times, most recently between 1907 and 1910. Today, the Old Bridge of Ayr is closed to vehicle traffic and only accessible to pedestrians. In his poem The Brigs of Ayr , Robert Burns correctly prophesied that the Old Bridge of Ayr would outlast the New Bridge of Ayr (rebuilt in 1877).

The Old Bridge of Ayr is a stone arch bridge that crosses the River Ayr in Ayr with four arches. While the northern three arches are worked as segment arches , the southern one is a pointed arch . The clear width is between 15.8 and 16.1 m, with the pillars each 4.6 m thick. These are designed with triangular protruding massive icebreakers . The bridge is about five meters wide.
