Old Devonshire House at 48 Boswell Street Theobald's Road was a manor house in the Bloomsbury district of the British capital, London .

history

In 1668 it was built by William Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Devonshire , for his son, also a William Cavendish . He was then a Member of Parliament for the Derby constituency and was promoted to the first Duke of Devonshire in 1694 . This house was later sold by William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire, who had Devonshire House built on the then fashionable Piccadilly .

In the 1930s, Benton Fletcher owned Old Devonshire House and housed his keyboard collection . He donated the house and his keyboard collection to the National Trust in November 1937 . In May 1941 the house was destroyed during a bombing raid by the German Air Force on Holborn. Most of the keyboard collection had previously been evacuated to Gloucestershire . It has remained there to this day and is currently on view at Fenton House in Hampstead.
