Old Kilmun House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Old Kilmun House is a mansion in the Scottish village of Kilmun . It is in a lofty position beyond the graveyard of St Munn's Parish Church, above the coast of Holy Loch . In 1992 the Old Kilmun House was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The exact date of origin of Old Kilmun House is not recorded. However, the early 18th century can be given as the construction period. A previous building from the 16th or 17th century already existed at the site, from which building materials, perhaps even complete elements, were taken over. Old Kilmun House was the seat of a laird from the Campbell clan . When he inherited new estates and relocated his ancestral home to that location, Old Kilmun House was initially leased for some time and then sold to James Duncan . The building has been expanded or redesigned several times in the course of its history. A lateral outgoing flight probably dates from the later 19th century and an addition to the southwest was added around 1900.

description

The building is of particular interest because of its atypical asymmetry. Usually mansions at this time were planned with an uneven number of window axes with a centered entrance area, resulting in a mirror-symmetrical structure. In the case of the Old Kilmun House, however, six axes were chosen, with the entrance door on the third axis, thus canceling the symmetry. The two-story Old Kilmun House was built from rubble stone. Corner stones made of sandstone are installed on the building edges. The entrance door is accessible via a stone staircase and is crowned with a triangular gable . This part of the building ends with a slate-covered gable roof . The wing, which extends orthogonally to the rear in the west, probably dates from the late 19th century and was initially only one-story. The connecting piece between the two parts was probably added around 1900 or a little later. It has two gables and a cantilevered upper floor.
