Old School EBM
Old School EBM describes the return to the musical roots and the aesthetics of the electronic body music of the 1980s. Since the mid-1990s, the term was initially used sporadically for performers who consistently continued the musical style after the decline of the EBM movement or who implemented elements of it compositionally in a (then) contemporary framework. Outside of relevant music magazines, the name was almost unknown until the end of the decade.
Only after the turn of the millennium did the expression old school EBM gain greater importance in a Western European EBM revival. The term 'Old School' ostensibly refers to the protagonists of the first generation, namely DAF , Die Krupps and Liaisons Dangereuses (see Proto-EBM ), who represented a minimalist style with a clear sequence emphasis on the basis of Spartan instrumentation. The massive use of sampling and the multi-faceted, melodic sound of later groups, such as Front 242, often play a rather subordinate role.
