Ole Crumlin-Pedersen

Ole Crumlin-Pedersen (born February 24, 1935 in Hellerup ; † October 14, 2011 ) was a Danish naval archaeologist, founder of the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde and a pioneer of naval archeology in the Middle Ages.

Life

He was the son of the engineer Gunnar Pedersen (1905-97) and his mother was Herdis GM Wohlleben (born 1907). He was already interested in naval archeology in his last school years. In 1954 he graduated from the Aurehøj Gymnasium in Gentofte . He then studied mechanical engineering with a specialization in shipbuilding. During his studies in 1956, he was able to convince the National Museum that the ship parts found in the Roskilde Fjord come from the Viking Age and thus set the project in motion that six years later led to the salvage of five Viking ships. The ships are now known as Skuldelev ships . In 1960 he graduated as cand.polyt. finished his studies and was technical director in the mentioned project. The year before he had married the singing teacher Leni Voldby (born 1938). The marriage lasted until 1976. From 1978 until her death he was married to Ingeborg Christmas-Møller (1942–2006).

From 1962 to 2002 he was employed at the National Museum, from 1965 to 1993 as head of the ship history laboratory. His authorship and research, which began with the documentation of the salvage, he continued throughout his life in the field of ship history. He also devoted himself to experimental archeology with the reconstruction of Viking ships. When the Vikingeskibshalle opened in Roskilde in 1965 , he was its first director, which he remained until 1985.

From 1993 to 2000 he was head of the Institute for Maritime Archeology at the National Museum in Roskilde. From 1997 to 2002 he was also honorary professor at Aarhus University . The University of Copenhagen awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2001; the Danish Queen in 2010 the Dannebrogden .

He was a member of the German Archaeological Institute .
