Oleg Jurjewitsch Atkow ( Russian Олег Юрьевич Атьков ; born May 9, 1949 in Chworostjanka , Kuibyshev Oblast ) is a former Soviet cosmonaut .

Life

After Atkow graduated from the 1st Medical Institute Iwan M. Setschenow in Moscow in 1973 , he received his doctorate in medicine there in 1978 at the Academy of Medical Sciences in the field of cardiology.

Admitted to the Soviet space program in 1977, Atkow was selected as a cosmonaut by the State Intermediate Commission on March 9, 1983. He completed his basic training between June and September 1983. Atkow flew as a research cosmonaut of the third regular crew Salyut 7 EO-3 to Salyut 7 in the function of a doctor on board.

After his space flight Oleg Jurjewitsch Atkow was employed at the Institute for Clinical Cardiology (since 1991 as a professor). In 1989 he was appointed Deputy Director of the Space Life Science Department at the International Space University (ISU) Strasbourg at the Strasbourg Central Campus in Illkirch-Graffenstaden ; he held this position until 1996. From 2000 he worked as a specialist in telemedicine for the European Commission .

Atkow is married and has one child.
