Olga Kocharovskaya (* 1956 ) is a Russian - American physicist who deals with nonlinear optics , quantum optics and lasers .

Life

Kocharovskaya studied at the Gorky State University , where she graduated in physics in 1978 and received her doctorate in 1986. From 1986 to 1998 she was at the Institute for Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Nizhny Novgorod - after her habilitation (Russian doctorate) in 1996 as a senior scientist - and at the same time from 1990 to 1996 at the Free University of Brussels (with Paul Mandel ). In 1998 she became Associate Professor and in 2001 Professor at Texas A&M University . Since 2006 she has held the rank of Distinguished Professor there .

She struck independently of Stephen E. Harris (1989, experimentally realized by him in 1990) with Ya. I. Khanin before Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), also independently of Harris, in 1988 she proposed lasing without inversion (LWI), which was confirmed experimentally in 1993.

In 2001 she proposed freezing a light pulse as an application of the EIT , which was confirmed experimentally at the JET Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In the 2000s, she extended the theory of EIT, LWI and Slow Light to solid state with the suggestion of new types of tunable solid state lasers. In 2006 she demonstrated EIT in solids at room temperature

In 1999, she proposed the possibility of manipulating gamma-ray transitions in nuclei via hyperfine structure coupling to the electronic transitions manipulated with lasers. In 2002, EIT was demonstrated at core transitions through the collaboration of your group with a group from the Catholic University of Leuven. The manipulation of the Mössbauer spectrum with lasers was later proven.

In 1998 she received the Willis E. Lamb Prize . She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (2005) and the Optical Society of America (1997). In 1996 she received a prize from the Russian Federation as an outstanding young scientist (Prize of the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences).
