Adolph Northen

Adolph Northen , also Adolf Northen , Adolf Northern or Adolph Northern (born November 6, 1828 in Münden in the Kingdom of Hanover , † May 28, 1876 in Düsseldorf ), was a German history and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

From 1847 to 1851 Northen studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , after having attended the Polytechnic School in Hanover for some time in order to become an architect at the request of his father, a rent master in Hannoversch Münden. Karl Ferdinand Sohn , Rudolf Wiegmann and Theodor Hildebrandt were his teachers at the Düsseldorf Academy . With his own studio he settled permanently in Düsseldorf, where he was a founding member of the artists' association Malkasten , and made a name for himself as a battle painter , where he distinguished himself by reproducing the war in its brutality. King Ernst August I of Hanover was one of his customers . He turned down a scholarship offered by the Hanoverian court to study in Paris with Horace Vernet . As a war painter he took part in the German War and Franco-German War .
