Olga Wassiljewna Smirnitskaja ( Russian Ольга Васильевна Смирнитская ; 1837 - 1920 ) was a musician who is considered to be one of the first female composers in Russia and at times had a love affair with Johann Strauss' son .

Life

Smirnitskaya was a respected figure in St. Petersburg's musical life . She overcame the obstacles and prejudices that noble women were subject to in 19th century Russia. She is considered to be one of the first Russian women who demonstrably tried to be a composer.

She also became known through her amorous relationship (1860–1862) with the Viennese waltz composer Strauss. He wrote numerous love letters to her, which were thought to be lost until the late 20th century. However, these letters have been preserved in copies kept in libraries in Russia.
