Olivier Geinoz (born June 3, 1833 in Neirivue ; † October 24, 1895 there) was a Swiss politician and State Councilor of the canton of Friborg .

Life

Geinoz was Catholic and from Neirivue . His parents were Simon Geinoz, farmer, and Marie-Ursule geb. Castella. Alexandre-Boniface-Olivier. He was the first cousin of the radical Grand Councilor Lucien Geinoz (1823–1873), chief bailiff of the Gruyère district (1854–1857), director of the Bulle – Romont railway company and transport company. He married Marie Thorin, from a notable family in Villars-sous-Mont . The couple had two daughters and one son.

After primary school in Neirivue , Olivier Geinoz attended the college in Saint-Maurice and the Freiburg canton school ( college St. Michael from 1848 to 1857). After studying law in Freiburg and Berlin , he completed an internship with the free-spirited notary Jean-Augustin Cuony. He was then secretary of the Oberamt (1857–1860) and then Oberamtmann (1860–1865) of the Vivisbach district .

From 1861 to 1881 he was a member of the Grand Council for the Gruyère district . On February 22, 1865 he was elected to the Council of State with 37 of 65 votes and took over the military direction (1865–1873). In doing so, he had to reconcile the growing demands of the federal government in matters of the army with Louis de Weck-Reynolds' austerity policy . In 1871 he organized the internment of the Bourbaki army . As a moderate conservative, member of the Cercle de l'Union, Geinoz disapproved of the right-wing slide of the liberal-conservative coalition. On December 1, 1873, he resigned from the State Council.

With a lot of energy he continued to defend the interests of his region. He was a founding member (1862) and then director (1873–1895) of the Crédit gruyérien and founder of the Société gruyérienne d'agriculture. Accused by the Liberté in 1877 of exerting a bad influence on the young members of the Cercle de l'Union, he brought charges against the newspaper, which was sentenced to a fine of 200 francs and 100 francs in damages.

Olivier Geinoz died on November 24, 1895 at the age of 63.
