economy
For a long time, Villars-sous-Mont was primarily an agricultural village. The animal husbandry and the dairy industry (for cheese production) have today an important place in the economic structure of the population. There are also some jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a furniture factory. Several gravel pits are being exploited in the Saane Valley. Villars-sous-Mont has been the location of the retirement and nursing home for all the villages of Haute-Gruyère since 1990. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Bulle region.
traffic
The village has good transport connections. It is on the main road from Bulle to Château-d'Oex . On July 23, 1903, the railway line from Bulle to Montbovon with the Grandvillard stop northeast of Villars-sous-Mont was put into operation.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1235 under the name Vilare sis Mont . The names Vilarsimont (1269), Villar Symon (1335), Vilarsymont (1359), Villardsymont (1514), Villarsimont (1555) and Villar sur Mont (1668) appeared later .
Villars-sous-Mont has been part of the county of Gruyères since the Middle Ages . After the last Count of Gruyères went bankrupt in 1554, the village came under the rule of Freiburg in 1555 and was assigned to the Vogtei of Gruyères. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Villars-sous-Mont first belonged to the prefecture and from 1848 to the Gruyères district.
On June 5, 2003, the voters of Villars-sous-Mont, Enney and Estavannens voted with a yes majority of over 90% for the merger of the municipalities. With effect from January 1, 2004, the new Bas-Intyamon community was created.
