Avry-devant-Pont ( Freiburger Patois ) is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the Gruyère district of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . On January 1, 2003, Avry-devant-Pont merged with Le Bry and Gumefens to form the new municipality of Pont-en-Ogoz and became the seat of the municipal administration. The former German name Afry vor Pont is no longer used today.
geography
Avry-devant-Pont lies at 789 m above sea level. M. , eight kilometers north-northeast of the district capital Bulle (linear distance ), in the Ogoz region. The village extends in a hollow south of the Russille forest ridge on the eastern slope of the Gibloux , in a panoramic position around 100 m above the lake level of the Lac de la Gruyère reservoir in the Freiburg Alpine foothills . The former community area was around 4.3 km² (including the lake). The area reached from the lake shore with the peninsula Vieux Châtel westward over the ridge of the Gibloux, which tapered to the east, to the ridge north of the summit (up to 1165 m above sea level ).
population
With 471 inhabitants (2002), Avry-devant-Pont was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Since the 1960s in particular, the village has seen a sharp increase in population. The settlement of La Cantine ( 737 m above sea level ) on the peninsula above Lac de la Gruyère also belongs to Avry-devant-Pont .
economy
Avry-devant-Pont was for a long time a predominantly agricultural village. In the 19th century, straw weaving and the production of straw hats were an important source of income for the residents. Cattle and dairy farming still have a certain place in the income structure of the population. There are also other jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. South of the village is the busy La Gruyère motorway service station, which also includes a hotel. In the last few decades Avry-devant-Pont has developed into a residential community. Many people in employment are therefore commuters who work primarily in the Freiburg and Bulle regions.
traffic
The community has good transport connections. It is located a little above the main road from Freiburg to Bulle . The area is crossed by the A12 motorway , which has been open from Bern to Vevey since 1981 . The next connection is about 6 km from the town center. Avry-devant-Pont is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics fribourgeois bus line , which runs from Freiburg via Rossens to Bulle.
history
The remains of a Roman manor have been discovered in the Avry-devant-Pont area . The first written mention of the place took place in 1177 under the name Abril . The names Aprilis and Avry also come from the 12th century , later the spellings Avrie (1202), April , Avril (1228), Aprili (1286), Avriez (1425) and Aury (1668) appeared. The place name is probably derived from the Gallo-Roman surname Aprius .
Ecclesiastically, the parish of Avry-devant-Pont has belonged to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard since it was first mentioned; In 1603 it was subordinated to the chapter of Saint Nicholas in Freiburg. Since the Middle Ages , the village was part of the Pont dominion, in 1450 it came partially and in 1482 completely to Freiburg and was assigned to the Vogtei Pont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Avry-devant-Pont first belonged to the Bulle district and from 1848 to the Gruyères district.
In 2002 the voters of Avry-devant-Pont voted with a yes majority of around 88% for the merger of the municipalities of Avry-devant-Pont, Le Bry and Gumefens . With effect from January 1, 2003, the new municipality of Pont-en-Ogoz was created.
