geography

Estavannens is seven kilometers south-southeast of the district capital Bulle (as the crow flies). The village consists of the two clustered villages Estavannens-Dessous ( 770  m above sea level ) and Estavannens-Dessus ( 798  m above sea level ), both of which are slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Saane (French: Sarine) on the alluvial cones of the The chain of the Dent du Bourgo ( 1909  m above sea level ) flowing down the streams Ruisseau du Dâ and Ruisseau de Fernand lie. Estavannens is located in the Haute-Gruyère, east of the Moléson massif . The former municipality area was around 21.1 km². The area extended from the Saane eastward over the valleys of Ruisseau du Dâ and Ruisseau de Maumochy, cut into the slope of the adjacent mountain range, to the Motélon valley and Dent de Folliéran ( 2340  m above sea level ). The northern border was formed by the Dent du Chamois ridge ( 1830  m above sea level ).

population

With 312 inhabitants (2002), Estavannens was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger.

economy

For a long time, Estavannens was predominantly an agricultural village. In the 19th century the Saane was straightened and valuable cultivated land was gained. In the past, straw weaving was also very important in the village. The animal husbandry and the dairy industry (for cheese production) have today an important place in the economic structure of the population. There are also some jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Bulle region.

regional customs

The Poyas von Estavannens, the alpine lifts in May, which are each designed as a folk festival, are known beyond the region .

traffic

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is away from the major thoroughfares. On July 23, 1903, the railway line from Bulle to Montbovon was put into operation with the Estavannens stop on the left of the Saane. A bus from the Transports publics Fribourgeois , which runs from Bulle to Grandvillard , connects Estavannens to the public transport network.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1231 under the names Estavanens and Extavanens ; from 1453 the spelling Extavannens has been handed down. The place name is derived from the Burgundian personal name Stawa and means with the suffix -ens as much as the people of the Stawa.

Estavannens has belonged to the county of Gruyères since the Middle Ages . In 1388 the counts granted the place extensive freedom. After the last Count of Gruyères went bankrupt in 1554, the village came under the rule of Freiburg in 1555 and was assigned to the Vogtei of Gruyères. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Estavannens first belonged to the prefecture and from 1848 to the district of Gruyères.

On June 5, 2003, the voters of Estavannens, Enney and Villars-sous-Mont voted with a yes majority of over 90% for the merger of the municipalities. With effect from January 1, 2004, the new Bas-Intyamon community was created.

Attractions

The parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, which originally dates back to the 14th century, but was largely rebuilt in 1635, stands on a small ledge near Estavannens-Dessus. The Chapelle du Dâ on the edge of the forest above Estavannens-Dessous dates from 1846. Both districts have retained their characteristic village image with farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries.
