geography

Maules is 893  m above sea level. M. , five and a half kilometers west-northwest of the district capital Bulle ( linear distance ). The farming village extends on the gently sloping south-west slope of the range of hills of Mont Gibloux , in a panoramic position above the Molasse plateau of the southwest Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 5.3 km². The area comprised the slope of Maules, reached in the north to the Ruisseau des Roubattes brook and the moorland of Les Gurles and in the east to the forest heights of Joux de Pra Fillieux ( 1057  m above sea level ); the southern border was formed by the Ruisseau de Létivan brook .

population

With 250 inhabitants (2002), Maules was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger with Sâles.

economy

Maules is still a predominantly agricultural village today . The animal husbandry and the dairy industry (for cheese production) have an important role in the employment structure of the population. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the Bulle region.

traffic

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is away from the major thoroughfares. The next connection to the A12 motorway , which has been open continuously from Bern to Vevey since 1981 , is around 4 km from the town center. Maules itself has no connection to public transport. The stations Sâles Vaulruz and on the railway line from Romont by Bull , which was inaugurated on July 1, 1868 are, some 1.5 km from Maules removed.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 930 under the name Molas . The names Molas superiores (995) as well as Molis and Moles appeared later . The place name is derived from the Latin word mola (millstone). Since its first mention, Maules has belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice . A noble family of Maules is mentioned later and in the 13th century the village came under the rule of Guillaume de Montagny and the lords of Illens. In 1377 the Lords of Vaulruz bought the village.

The Vaulruz reign was sold to Freiburg in 1536 and converted into a bailiwick that lasted until 1798. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Maules belonged to what was then the Bulle district during the Helvetic Republic and the subsequent period until 1848, before it was incorporated into the Gruyères district. In 2000, the voters of Maules initially voted against a merger with Sâles. In a second vote, however, there was a majority in favor of the merger. With effect from January 1, 2001, the previously independent communities of Maules, Romanens and Rueyres-Treyfayes were incorporated into Sâles.

Attractions

The Maules chapel was built in 1670. Ecclesiastically, the village has always belonged to the parish of Sâles.
