Olivier Guyon

Olivier Guyon (* 1976 ) is a French astronomer .

Life

Guyon was an amateur astronomer even in his youth. He studied from 1996 at the École normal supérieure (ENS) with a license in 2000 as well as at the Institute for Astrophysics of Paris (1998/99) and in 2002 at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie) with Pierre Lena ( Paris Observatory ) and Francois Roddier ( University of Hawaii ) is doing his PhD ( Wide Field Interferometric imaging and applications ). He has been Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Astronomy and the College of Optical Science at the University of Arizona at Tucson, at the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics , since 2008 .

He is also at the University of Victoria and since 2002 a scientist at the Subaru Telescope of the National Observatory of Japan in Hawaii. There he heads the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics Group (SCExAO).

With a new technique, Guyon improved the resolution of coronographs on telescopes, such as those used to observe extrasolar planets (Phased Induced Amplitude Apodization, PIAA, or Phased Induced Amplitude Apodization Coronograph, PIAAC). His method reduced the necessary reflecting telescope diameter by almost half and thus considerably facilitated the development of planned special space telescopes for the search for planets. He also made other contributions to instrument development for amateur telescopes and in adaptive optics .

In 2012 he became a MacArthur Fellow . In 2003 he received the Daniel Guinier Prize from the French Physical Society and in 2006 he received an Early Career Award from the US President.
