Olivier Voinnet (born June 1, 1972 in France ) is a French biologist and professor of RNA biology at the ETH Zurich . Voinnet received his PhD in England in 2001 in the group of David Baulcombe and later received a position as independent group leader at the CNRS in Strasbourg, where he was promoted to Directeur de recherche in 2005 . In 2010 he moved to ETH Zurich, where he was appointed full professor for RNA biology.

Manipulations

In 2015, his work was examined for manipulation. The investigation at the ETH Zurich showed that the scientist "has violated his duty of care in handling numbers and in his supervisory duties as research director ... and has received a warning regarding his behavior", but also came to the conclusion that " it is not a matter of scientific misconduct within the meaning of the ETH rules of procedure ". Another independent investigation by the CNRS found that "the existence of willful manipulation of charts and graphs in violation of ethical standards for the presentation of scientific results" and further stated that such "inappropriate presentation of experimental data, however does not amount to manufacturing. " Eight of Voinnet's scientific articles have been withdrawn and twelve publications have published corrections.

Suspensions

Since July 2015 Voinnet has been suspended from the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) for two years . This suspension begins once when he asks to return from his leave of absence. In January 2016, the Swiss National Science Foundation stopped financing Voinnet and blocked it for three years.

Awards

In 2009 Voinnet was awarded the EMBO gold medal from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).

In 2013 he was awarded the Rössler Prize of the ETH Zurich, which is donated by Max Rössler and awarded every year to a young professor at ETH Zurich who is considered to be one of the most promising young scientists in further development her career applies.

Withdrawn

In 2016, the EMBO withdrew the gold medal awarded to Voinnet in 2009.
