Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu (born April 13, 1960 in Nigeria ) is a Nigerian aeronautical engineer and President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Origin and education

Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu was born in Nigeria in 1960. He studied aerospace engineering and aviation law at the Institute for Civil Aviation Technology in Kiev and graduated in 1987 with a doctorate. In 2005 he obtained a Diploma in Civil Aviation Management from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In 2009, he obtained further qualifications in aviation and space law from McGill University, Canada .

Career

From 1988 to 1999 Aliu held various managerial positions at the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA), and from 2000 to 2004 he was director of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) with responsibility for air traffic control .

In 2005 he was sent to the ICAO Council as a representative of Nigeria, and has held various positions there since then. Among other things, he led large conferences, for example on alternative fuels in aviation ( Rio de Janeiro 2009) or working groups on building a safe air traffic system in Africa (AFI plan 2008 to 2013). Aliu has been the fifth President of the ICAO Council since 2014. In 2016 he was confirmed in this office for a further 3 years.

Aliu was praised for the reorientation of the ICAO since 2014, which he had put under the motto “Leave no country behind”. He received special recognition in 2016 for the implementation of the “ CORSIA-MBM-System ” climate protection program .

  • 2011 African Airlines Association (AFRAA) Individual Achievement Award
  • 2010 African Aviation Leadership Individual Achievement Award

Private

Aliu is married and has three children.
