Ölvaldi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ölvaldi , also Olvaldi ( old Norse omnipotent ) is a giant of Norse mythology .

He is the father of Thiazi , Gangr and Iði and the grandfather of Skadis . According to the Skáldskaparmál , Ölvaldi owned a lot of gold. When he died, his three sons shared their father's wealth among themselves. As a unit of measurement, they chose their own mouths. Everyone took a mouthful of gold until the last bit was divided. For this reason, the saga expressions "the speech of Thiazi, Gangr or Idi" and "Idi's brilliant language" are considered to be the Kenningar for gold.
