In the 1956 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Melbourne on November 26, at the Melbourne Exhibition Building, the weightlifting heavyweight held for men.

It was won by the American Paul Anderson, ahead of the Argentine Humberto Selvetti and the Italian Alberto Pigaiani .

The athletes competed against each other in the so-called three-way battle. In addition to the usual disciplines of tearing and pushing, this also included pushing. The lifter had to transfer the weight first and then bring it to the high stretch without using the legs.
According to the competition regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the body weight of every heavyweight boxer had to be more than 90 kg.

Six records were set during the competition: The winner Paul Anderson set an Olympic record with 500.0 kg (total), 145.0 kg in snatch and 187.5 kg in jerk. Runner-up Humberto Selvetti also set three Olympic records : 500.0 kg (total), 175.0 kg in pushing and 145.0 kg in snatch
