The Olympic Village

The Vancouver Olympic Village for the 2010 Winter Games consisted of a unit in Vancouver and a unit in Whistler . The living space of the complex is approximately 111,000 m² (1.2 million square feet ).

Vancouver

The Vancouver Olympic Village is located southeast of Downtown Vancouver, in the Southeast False Creek area . The Science World Museum is in the immediate vicinity . False Creek owes its name to the fact that the explorers of Vancouver at the time originally assumed that this foothill would extend further inland - but that was not the case, which is why False Creek ( literally English for False Creek ) got its name.

Originally, the Southeast False Creek area was used for industrial purposes. The area was divided into seven sub-areas by the City of Vancouver's Official Development Plan. The Olympic Village was the first parcel to be implemented from this plan. The construction costs came to around US $ 1 billion in the end. Originally, however, only US $ 47 million had been budgeted.

The Olympic Village offered space for around 2,800 athletes during the Olympic Games. It was handed over to VANOC (The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games) on November 1, 2009, and it was returned to the city on April 7, 2010. Sale as apartments is planned for use after the Olympic Games. Sales to the public began on May 16. Due to the crisis in the real estate market, this sale is going badly so far and not even half of all apartments have been sold.

Awards: The development received the “LEED Gold” and “LEED Platinum” awards for its innovative, sustainable design, which are awarded by the Canadian “Green Building Council”.

Whistler

Whistler is 130 kilometers, or about 1.5 hours by car, north of Vancouver and was home to 2,850 athletes and officials. The Olympic Village in Whistler cost $ 32 million to build and the buildings continue to be used as accommodation for sporting events, staff homes and a training center for athletes. In addition, part of the facility was converted into a lodge.
