Om Ali , Umm Ali or Oumm Ali ( Arabic أم علي, DMG Umm ʿAlī '  Ali's mother') is a dessert that is particularly popular in Egypt . There are numerous variations with different compositions.

In Egypt, the story is told that the dish was invented by Umm Ali to celebrate her victory over a rival.

preparation

Pastries ( bread , Danish pastry or puff pastry ) are cut into small pieces and mixed with pistachios , coconut flakes , raisins and plenty of sugar . Then everything is put into a mold and milk is poured over it. Finally, the mixture is sprinkled with cinnamon . (In some recipes the whole thing is finished with cinnamon and cream .) Finally, the mass is baked in the oven until the surface is golden brown.
