Minaret of the Omar Mosque

The Omar Mosque ( Arabic مسجد عمر بن الخطاب, DMG Masǧid ʿUmar b. al-Ḫaṭṭāb , Hebrew מסגד עומר) is located in the immediate vicinity of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Christian quarter ( Muristan area ) of Jerusalem's old town in Israel .

The mosque was built by Sultan al-Afdal ibn Salah ad-Din from the Ayyubid dynasty and was intended to commemorate the siege of Jerusalem in 637. It stands on the spot where Caliph Omar prayed after conquering the city. Its minaret is about 15 meters high and towers over the neighboring Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Occasionally, the Dome of the Rock on the neighboring Temple Mount is also referred to as the "Omar Mosque".
