Omega is a household electrical appliance brand. The owner is Omega electric GmbH in Schmölln .

The Omega brand goes back to an Alsatian company that was taken over in 1908 by the Altenburg company HA Köhlers Söhne Metallwarenfabrik Altenburg . Electrical household appliances have been produced under the Omega brand since 1908. The most famous product of this brand is a vacuum cleaner . The first electric vacuum cleaner under the Omega brand was produced in the 1920s. Until the 1950s, the vacuum cleaners were developed in what is now VEB Elektrowärme Altenburg , from which the current brand owner emerged. From the end of the 1950s, the development was taken over by professional external product designers , and in the 1980s by students from the University of Industrial Design in Halle - Burg Giebichenstein . In addition to their attractive and practical design, the Omega vacuum cleaners were primarily known for their ease of maintenance and repair.

In the course of the formation of the combine in the 1970s, there were some changes: VEB Elektrowärme Altenburg became part of the combine Elektrogerätewerk Suhl . The production of cylinder vacuum cleaners was relocated from Altenburg to VEB Elektroinstallation Oberlind. Finally, the uniform brand name AKA electric was introduced for almost all products of the Elektrogerätewerk Suhl combine . As a result, the Omega brand name temporarily disappeared from the market.

The vacuum cleaners were sold under the name Quelle Privileg and as no-name products in the Federal Republic of Germany.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the brand was revived, the manufacturer renamed itself and relocated its headquarters from Altenburg to Schmölln.

In addition to vacuum cleaners, other household appliances such as mixers and irons are sold under the name Omega .
