background
Leah Olivar grew up in a very poor but happy family. When she was 12, her mother, Rona, went to the United States to work for the better future of her family. Life gets better for Leah, her sister Tiffany and their father Sol (Joel Torre). However, a tragedy changes their life forever. For Leah, Rona's death awakens the desire to go to America and fulfill her mother's "American dream".
Ten years later, that dream comes true when Leah receives her visa for a choir competition in San Francisco , California . After the competition, Leah extends her residency in San Francisco with the intent of visiting her mother's grave and finding a way to legally work in the United States. However, to her surprise, Leah can't find her mother's grave, and with her visa expiring, it's also hard to find a job that allows her to stay in the United States.
At the urging of Jack, the mother of Leah's ex-boyfriend Jigs, and out of desperation, Leah agrees to a marriage of convenience so that she can get her visa. But with Leah's limited resources, it will be difficult for Jack to find a partner for her. The only eligible person who would agree to the small amount Leah is willing to pay is Jack's nephew Clark, who has lived in San Francisco for 11 years. His life was filled with heartbreak when he went to the United States with his mother Ofelia to be introduced to his American father, Kenneth. Shortly thereafter, Kenneth refuses to recognize Clark as his son, and Ofelia suddenly dies. Clark is taken to nursing homes where he has been molested. Later, because of his love for his siblings in the Philippines, Clark persisted and survived in the United States. This misfortune and responsibility in life robbed Clark of romantic love.
Despite their disastrous first meeting, Leah and Clark spend time as a fake couple, learning about each other's past, quirks, and habits in order to pass the interview with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Over time, Leah and Clark discover a certain love for each other. They also realize that they both have the same goals in life and that it is a better life for their family.
They also begin to sympathize with each other as they both reveal their deepest secrets. Soon Leah and Clark's fake marriage becomes real.
