Life

Bendel was the son of the binder and later mining clerk Franz Joseph Bendel and his wife Anna, the legitimate daughter of Bernard Jackl from Mariaschein in the Bohemian Ore Mountains . His unmarried grandmother Theresia Bendel came from Lupitz in the district of Leitmeritz. Franz Joseph Bendel was born in house number 167 in Mariaschein and was baptized a Catholic on the afternoon of his birthday.

After attending grammar schools in Mariaschein and Leitmeritz, Franz Joseph Bendel studied theology and philosophy at the universities of Innsbruck and Vienna in 1895. He was ordained a priest on July 9, 1899, and he served as a chaplain. In addition, he continued his scientific studies of medieval history and historic auxiliary sciences, a doctorate in 1906 for Dr. phil. and passed his state examination a year later at the Austrian Institute for Historical Research in Vienna. Due to a chronic throat problem, he was no longer able to work from Kaplan from 1907 onwards. After he had worked for a short period as court master of Count von Thun in Trient , he was placed by university professor Anton Chroust in Würzburg, where a research assistant for the Society for Franconian History founded by Chroust . V. was searched. After just four years, the tensions between Bendel and Chroust had grown so strong that Bendel resigned from this office and continued to work as a private scholar.

From 1920 he worked in the episcopal diocesan archive in Würzburg, which he later took over. In 1936 Franz Joseph Bendel was incardinated . As he got older, his health deteriorated. He suffered a stroke, which left his right hand temporarily paralyzed. Nevertheless, he continued to conduct diocesan historical research for the diocese of Würzburg until his death in 1950, which was made more difficult because the episcopal ordinariate was housed in Oberzell from the bombing in 1945 until 1950.

Franz Josef Bendel was a member of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History .
