Demonstration in Livorno on October 20, 2008

Onda (in German: Welle ) is a college and high school movement in Italy . It was created in September 2008 as a protest against the educational reform (decree 112/2008) of the center-right government minister Mariastella Gelmini .

development

Based on the protests in Greece, the first large Ondra demonstrations took place on October 10th. A week later, Ondra supported the successful strike of the basic unions in the education and service sectors. According to their own statements, over 2 million people gathered in Rome for a rally against Berlusconi on October 25, 2008, and on November 7 there were further large demonstrations across Italy. A week later, tens of thousands of young people demonstrated in Rome, Turin, Cagliari, Genoa, Bari, Bologna, Florence, Milan, Naples, Pisa, Padua and Palermo. On December 12, 2008, the CGIL union held a half-day general strike and the Onda called for independent demonstrations at the same time.

causes

The government's austerity measures due to economic problems mean that young people in particular have an uncertain prospect of a professional future, as 20 to 30-year-olds already live in precarious conditions in many southern European countries and even university graduates can find no or poorly paid jobs. The government plans to save several billion euros, including closing schools and not renewing thousands of fixed-term contracts at universities. Protests were also directed against the reintroduction of the unit teacher who teaches all subjects.
