Ono Seiichirō ( Japanese 小野 清 一郎 ; born January 10, 1891 in Morioka ( Iwate Prefecture ); died March 9, 1986 in Tōkyō ) was a Japanese scholar of criminal law.

Live and act

Ono Seiichirō graduated from the law school of Tōkyō University in 1917 . For further training he visited France and Germany . He worked as a public prosecutor for a while, then became a professor at his alma mater. Ono was one of the first scholars in Japan to focus on the criminal law. His early book, "Lectures on the Rules of Procedure in Criminal Proceedings" (刑事訴訟法 講義, Keiji soshō-hō kōgi) from 1924, contained the first full discussion of this branch of justice in Japan.

Ono's theory of criminal law was steeped in ethical ideas. The basis for him was the idea of a philosophy based on morality, especially the Buddhist philosophy. In 1938 he followed his mentor Makino Eiichi after his retirement to his chair at the University of Tōkyō. It was adopted in 1951 as "Meiyo Kyōju". His draft for a revised criminal law, although criticized because of its authoritarian orientation, influenced the revision of the criminal law after 1945. One of his students was Dandō Shigemitsu .

In 1972 Ono was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Cultural Order in the same year .

Other publications Onos are

  • "Development of the Japanese legal logic according to self-awareness" (日本 法理 の 自 覚 的 展開, Nihon hōri no jikakuteki tenkai) 1942,
  • "Overview of the criminal law" (刑法 概論, Keihō gairon) 1952,
  • "Theory of the criminal offense" (犯罪 構成 要件 の 理論, Hanzai kōsei-yōken no riron) 1953.

Remarks

  1. Meiyo Kyōju (名誉 教授) is occasionally rendered in German as "Professor emeritus". But in contrast to this title, which is automatically used on retirement, this is a special award only occasionally granted in Japan.
