Onshape is CAD software for 3D modeling that is played over the Internet and paid for as Software as a Service (SaaS). It is heavily based on cloud servers , to which complex calculations and rendering are outsourced. The user has a browser or the apps for iOS or Android as the operating interface .

There are opportunities for online collaboration and the models are stored in databases instead of files.

Sales model

The software can be rented and is free as a viewer, also for hobbyists, whereby all models are then public. The standard version for USD 2,100 per year and user lacks some modeling functions, the professional version for USD 2,100 lacks functions for workflow and user management, and the enterprise solution starts at USD 20,000 per team and year.

history

Jon Hirschtick , who launched SolidWorks - the first widely used 3D CAD software - in 1995 , sold the company to Dassault Systèmes in 1997 .

He stayed with SolidWorks until 2011, but started developing Onshape a year later. Together with John McEleney (CEO SolidWorks) and Dave Corcoran (previously an executive at SolidWorks and before that at Computervision ), he led a team of six co-founding engineers, some of whom previously also worked at SolidWorks. The goal was to design CAD software. The initial $ 9 million funding came from North Bridge Venture Partners and Commonwealth Capital . The first beta for the browser was released in March 2015, the first version for Android in August, and the first stable (commercial) version in December. The Onshape App Store was also published, in which additional modules such as finite elements from third-party companies are available.

In May 2016, FeatureScript was published, a programming language to parametrically create and modify CAD models. MIT is licensed for this .

In 2018 the software was expanded to include many important functions such as version management, BOM, role-based user accounts, and much more. completed.

In November 2019, PTC, headed by Jim Heppelmann , bought Onshape for US $ 470 million, by then 169 million risk capital had been raised and a workforce of 100 had been reached.
