The Ontojärvi is a lake in the town of Kuhmo in the Finnish landscape Kainuu .
The Ontojärvi forms with the much smaller Nurmesjärvi , which is located in the southeast, a 104.57 km² large lake, which is at an altitude of 159.2 m. The lakes Lentua and Lammasjärvi to the east are located in the 4949 km² catchment area of the Ontojärvi . The Ontojärvi is drained in the west from Ontojoki to Iso-Kiimanen . From there, the water flows on to Oulujärvi and over the Oulujoki to the Gulf of Bothnia . The center of Kuhmo is a few kilometers east of Ontojärvi.
