The harlequin poison dart frog ( Oophaga histrionica , syn .: Dendrobates histrionicus ), sometimes also called the spotted poison dart frog, is a species from the family of poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae).

features

The frogs reach a body length of 36 to 42 millimeters and thus belong to the larger representatives of the family. Your skin is smooth. The color is variable, but usually consists of one to many red, orange, yellow, white or blue dots, spots, bands or lines on a black or brown base color. Males are usually the same size or slightly larger than the females.

Occurrence

The harlequin tree climber occurs in northwest Colombia in the province of Chocó and in Ecuador . He lives in the rainforests of the lowlands; They are mostly found at heights of 0 to 300 meters above sea level, rarely up to 1100 meters.

Way of life

The males call from low-lying branches that are no more than one meter above the ground. Either the female or the male leads the partner to a suitable egg-laying site. This is not always determined by the male , as is the case with most other species of the genus Oophaga . On the way to the resting place, the male often touches the female and also sits on his back. The courtship behavior is very complicated and comprises a two to three hour phase in which the partners take turns sitting opposite, circling, touching, or the female twisting her body. Presumably the female carries the tadpoles to a watering place. These are leaf axils filled with water, such as the bromeliad family , or crevices in the rock and the like. Females occasionally destroy or eat the nests of other conspecifics.
