OpenDS is a free driving simulator that was primarily developed for scientific purposes. The simulator is written in Java and uses the jMonkeyEngine . The core components were developed at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence . The development was funded by the European Commission , the source code is provided under the open source license GNU GPL .

Range of functions

In addition to the actual driving simulation, OpenDS has the following range of functions:

  • Traffic simulation
  • Simulation of traffic lights
  • Weather simulation
  • Analysis tool for driving behavior
  • Eye tracking

The software also includes various pre-built car and road models, as well as driving tasks.

Supported hardware

OpenDS can be controlled with the keyboard or with USB steering wheels. It is also possible to connect OpenDS to the CAN bus of a car and thus control the simulation with the car. In addition, the software supports various image output formats that allow projection with a view of up to 360 ° and the Oculus Rift .
